Aidan Hutchinson, who was a fan favourite and prolific as a rookie, will need to become more reliable for the Lions in his second season.
The former Michigan star made several huge plays and occasionally dominated. But he found it difficult to consistently deliver. Although he finished his first season with an amazing nine and a half sacks, more than half of those came in just two games—against the Green Bay Packers in Week 18 and the Washington Commanders in Week 2. On the other hand, he went through six games last season without even a QB hurry and ten without a sack.
Hutchinson seemed one-dimensional at times, and offensive tackles would purposefully let him rush the passer outside, knowing full well that he would probably not cut back inside and would not get to the quarterback.
Nevertheless, Hutchinson has a playmaking ability that not many players possess. He was one of the few defensive players to be designated a finalist for the Heisman Trophy because of this. In 2022, he demonstrated his ability to perform at the NFL level by recording three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
As mentioned, this season the Lions will probably play a lot of close games. Hutchinson has a keen eye for the ball and might win some games.
However, the NFL’s top teams have outstanding pass rushers. The defensive line must consistently apply pressure for the Lions. And their best opportunity to have that is with Hutchinson.
