“This might have been our last chance.” After the loss, the Lions coach gives a message……..
The Detroit Lions’ fantastical season came to an end on Sunday night at Levi’s Stadium when they were defeated by the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. And although their fan base will undoubtedly be hurt by the defeat, there are unquestionably many things to look forward to in the future.
Lions coach Dan Campbell revealed more of his team’s message following the 34-31 defeat, despite their promising future.
See, I warned those guys that we might only have one chance. Do I believe that? No. Do I think that to be true? After the game, Campbell told reporters, “No.” But I am aware of how difficult it is to get here. I know this for sure. Regaining this level of performance will be twice as difficult as it was this year. That is the situation as it is. We have no chance of returning here if we lose the same work ethic and hunger, which is something else entirely once the offseason arrives. How much better we get, what we add, or what we draft doesn’t matter to me. It is unimportant. It will not be easy.
The Lions dominated the first half of the game, leading 24-7 at the break. However, the 49ers came roaring back to win and secure their spot in Super Bowl LVIII.
Campbell made a few dubious play choices in the third quarter, such as deciding against going for the first down at the 49ers’ 28-yard line and instead letting their lead drop to 17 points. Once more, with seven and a half minutes left and the Lions behind by three, Campbell decided to try to convert instead of going for the game-winning field goal.
Although attempts to prolong the trip were unsuccessful, Campbell assured reporters he is not sorry about his final decision.
Campbell has put a lot of effort into creating a culture that his group will embrace. He quickly gained notoriety in 2021 after his “kneecap” first news conference. And in spite of a dismal 2021 campaign. After ending 9-8 in 2022, Detroit went on to win 12-5 and take the lead in the NFC North rankings.
The Lions seem to be all in with Campbell, even if they are aware of how difficult it will be to return to the postseason. Additionally, Detroit has +1200 chances to win Super Bowl LIX in 2024 according to DraftKings Sportsbook, which isn’t ruling it out.
