Free agency reliever is expected to work out for teams this week, according a report from Jon Heyman of the New York Post. He pitched successfully for the Toronto Blue Jays and Philadelphia Phillies in addition to helping lead the Houston Astros to the 2017 World Series championship.
Free agency reliever Ken Giles is reportedly still working on his return and will toss for interested teams this coming week, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
For any interested teams, veteran closer Ken Giles will be throwing a bullpen in Phoenix on Friday, January 26. Reportedly, Giles is in good health and prepared to continue his MLB career. Medical records are available upon request.
Giles, 33, did not throw a single pitch in the major leagues in 2023. After agreeing to a minor league contract in May, he played in 21 minor league games for the Dodgers, going 1-0 while recording an 8.55 ERA.
Throughout his eight major league seasons, Giles has played for the Phillies (2014–15), Astros (2016–18), Blue Jays (2018–2020), and Mariners (2022). In addition to recording 115 career saves, he assisted the Astros in winning the 2017 World Series. In 2017, he made 34 career-saving appearances for Houston.
Injuries have been a problem for Giles in recent years. Due to Tommy John surgery, he missed the majority of 2020 and 2021. However, he returned in 2022 to play five games for the Mariners.
At the Major League level, he has a 12.3 K/9 and a lifetime 2.71 ERA. Given his reported health and past achievements, it’s reasonable to presume he’ll receive an invitation to someone’s spring training.
He probably won’t be his 2024 team’s closer, but he might be a useful addition in the seventh or eighth inning for a team.
