A few months ago, Craig Counsell joined the Chicago Cubs from the Milwaukee Brewers. Counsell is making a strong first impression, according to a number of Cubs coaches and players. His coaching staff is set, and executive Jed Hoyer is seeking to add players to the team.
“He arrived as promised. Superbly clever, multifaceted, and possessing novel perspectives, all while maintaining a minimalistic approach to life. It’s like, “Don’t overthink it; this is how we do it.”
-Tony Hottovy, pitching coach for the Cubs
“He got right into creating the culture and all the team-building activities. It was just such a beautiful moment because, although he is really excellent at the Xs and Os, he sees himself more as a team builder and roster builder—basically, as a guy who is very good at uniting the entire group.
“He was always quite adept in matchup-related tasks. They had a strong bullpen all the time, but he was always an extremely effective bullpen manager. He was a frustrating opposing hitter who always made the same mistakes. Additionally, it seemed like he would always stick with the individual you didn’t want to see.”

“It’s just about being all-around — just being able to play any position,” Shaw stated during Cubs Convention this weekend. “[Hoerner] mentioned how fortunate he was to be able to accomplish it. He was a versatile player who could play outfield, third base, shortstop, second base, and really anyplace.
“You think, ‘Well, it makes sense,’ when you see folks like that who are in the organisation and have had great success. They are looking for a guy just like that. You aspire to be that man.
Shaw, who was drafted with the 13th overall choice in the previous summer’s draft and is ranked No. 7 among the Cubs’ Top 30 prospects by MLB Pipeline, has focused this offseason on improving his defensive versatility. The 22-year-old infielder has chosen to spend the early winter months practicing in the field rather than hitting the field.
Pitching prospects have been moved quickly up the organisational ladder by the Cubs. Jordan Wicks, a lefty, advanced from Double-A to the Chicago rotation the previous season. In ’22, right-winger Javier Assad followed suit.
