Luke Getsy, the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, was let go earlier this week.
They have now started the hiring process, and among the candidates are a high-level NFL assistant, a current NFL offensive coordinator, and an unconventional college prospect from the Kentucky Wildcats.
Although it’s unclear if his successor would be faced with creating an offensive scheme around Justin Fields and the weapons they would probably acquire if they maintain him, or if they will be developing one of the “generational” rookies, it’s an intriguing position with a lot of unanswered issues.
In a meeting with the media earlier this week, general manager and head coach Matt Eberflus—who was extended for a more season following his defense’s surge in the second half of 2023—discussed the qualities they are looking for in their next offensive coordinator.
It goes without saying that you want a fantastic teacher,” Eberflus stated. “You know he has to coach the coaches in order to coach the position, so I believe that’s vital. Shane Waldron, the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, was the first person the Chicago Bears requested an interview with. Waldron is open to considering other jobs now that Pete Carroll isn’t the head coach in Seattle.
It would be intriguing to see if Waldron could apply the same tactic he used with Geno Smith, who was a career backup before successfully assuming the starting position in Seattle.
It should come as no surprise that San Francisco 49ers passing game coordinator Klint Kubiak is currently on the list. Without the hiring of coaches from the Niners, the offseason wouldn’t be an offseason. Shanahan needs to be prepared for that at this point.
Kubiak’s previous experience as a coordinator always guaranteed his stint with the 49ers was short-term. The concern is how many assistants Kubiak would bring with him to the Bears or another team, similar to what would happen if defensive coordinator Steve Wilks were signed elsewhere.

Coen was a surprising departure for the coaching staff in Lexington following his first season as offensive coordinator at Kentucky. This was because Sean McVay had given his former assistant a call after offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell departed the Los Angeles Rams to take a head coaching position with the Minnesota Vikings.
