Knicks Predicted to Cut Ties with Failed $66 Million Big Man Duo Via Trade to Bulls

The New York Knicks, after several years of experimentation, are reportedly on the verge of cutting ties with their underperforming $66 million big man duo. The players in question—Julius Randle and Mitchell Robinson—were once seen as integral pieces to the team’s future, but after inconsistent performances, the Knicks are reportedly exploring trade options to move them out of New York. According to recent reports, the Chicago Bulls are a prime candidate to take on the struggling pair in a potential trade deal.

A Disappointing Investment

When the Knicks signed Julius Randle to a four-year, $117 million extension in 2021 and Mitchell Robinson to a four-year, $60 million contract in 2022, both players were expected to be key components in the team’s rebuilding process. Randle, coming off an All-Star season in 2021, seemed poised to be a foundational player for the Knicks. Similarly, Robinson, with his elite shot-blocking and rebounding ability, was viewed as a potential defensive anchor for years to come.

However, both players have failed to live up to expectations. Randle’s play has been inconsistent, marked by wild fluctuations in scoring and efficiency, while his leadership has often been questioned. Robinson, while a solid defensive presence, has shown little growth on the offensive end, particularly in areas like post-scoring and setting solid screens. The duo’s inability to mesh with the rest of the roster has led to frustration for both the team and the fanbase.

The Knicks’ Desire for Change

With the Knicks continuing to struggle for consistency, particularly in the frontcourt, management is reportedly eager to make significant roster changes. Trading Randle and Robinson would give New York the flexibility to pursue a new direction, possibly focusing on acquiring more dynamic players who can complement their star guards, Jalen Brunson and RJ Barrett.

The team’s front office has made no secret of its desire to improve. While the Knicks remain competitive in the playoff race, there is a growing belief that their ceiling is limited by the lack of cohesion in their frontcourt. Moving on from Randle and Robinson could open up cap space and create a more balanced roster moving forward, allowing the Knicks to address other weaknesses.

Chicago Bulls: The Likely Destination

The Chicago Bulls, facing their own set of challenges, are reportedly interested in acquiring both Randle and Robinson in exchange for a package that could include several role players and future draft picks. The Bulls have struggled with consistency this season and have been searching for ways to bolster their frontcourt. Randle’s ability to stretch the floor and create offense could be a perfect fit alongside Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, while Robinson could help anchor the Bulls’ defense in the paint.

For the Bulls, a trade for Randle and Robinson would provide them with two experienced players who have the potential to make an immediate impact. Randle could thrive in a different environment where he has more offensive support, while Robinson could give Chicago a much-needed defensive presence. However, the trade would come with significant risk, as both players have displayed erratic performances over the past few seas
