Next year’s Formula 1 sprint weekends will be different, as several ideas to up the drama are being considered. Sprints were first held in 2021, however some have criticized them for serving as a prelude to the main Grand Prix. While it has been essentially agreed upon to alter the order of the events, it is believed that part of the grid may be reversed.
In an effort to up the drama in 2024, it is rumored that Formula 1 executives are debating whether or not to flip a portion of the grid for sprint races.
Sprint weekends were introduced in 2021, but opinions on them are divided. Some believe they take away some of the suspense because they serve as a preview for the main Grand Prix.
Three-time world champion Max Verstappen is one of the detractors; he suggested they be eliminated for the 2023 campaign.
They plan to return in 2024, although suggestions to alter the structure in order to liven up the action are being thought about.
One option is to reverse a portion of the grid, like the top 10, and the other is to amend the parc ferme rules to prohibit teams from making modifications to their cars after the first practice session.
Should it be put into effect, the 100-kilometer race would take place on Saturday, with the sprint qualifying on Friday.
Following the sprint, there will be GP qualifying, with the main race taking place on Sunday as normal.
The ten teams, the FIA, and F1 will convene as the F1 Commission in January to deliberate over a final plan.
The Chinese GP, which is scheduled to return to the schedule for the first time since 2019, will take place the weekend before the inaugural sprint event in 2024.
