BREAKING NEWS: Falcons Coach Discloses Internal Wrangling Over Kirk Cousins Agreement and Other Key Roster Decisions
ATLANTA, GA — In a candid and unexpected revelation, Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Raheem Morris has addressed the internal debates that have taken place regarding the team’s pursuit of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, as well as two other major roster decisions that have shaped the team’s strategy for the rest of the 2024 season.
Speaking to reporters earlier today, Morris confirmed that the Falcons had been deeply involved in discussions over potentially acquiring Cousins from the Minnesota Vikings, but acknowledged that there was considerable internal disagreement on the matter. While some factions of the front office were strongly in favor of bringing in the seasoned quarterback to elevate the Falcons’ playoff hopes this season, others questioned whether it was the right long-term move for a team that has placed significant focus on developing its young core.
“The conversation surrounding Kirk was certainly a point of contention for us,” Morris said. “There were a lot of differing opinions on what his presence would mean for our future. Some wanted to bring in a guy with that kind of experience to take us over the top this year, but ultimately, we felt our future was best served by sticking with the young guys we’ve developed.”
Cousins, who is in the final year of his contract with the Vikings and has been linked to several teams in need of a quarterback, was considered by some in the Falcons’ front office as a stabilizing force who could immediately upgrade the team’s playoff chances. However, Morris and others in the organization, including the coaching staff, ultimately decided to stay the course with second-year quarterback Desmond Ridder.
Morris continued, “We believe in Desmond. We’ve seen his growth and know he has the potential to lead this team. We’re not just focused on winning now — we’re building for sustainable success.”
In addition to the Cousins discussions, Morris also touched on two other high-profile internal debates: the future of wide receiver Calvin Ridley and the team’s pursuit of a premier pass rusher. Ridley, who was the subject of trade rumors earlier in the season, has been a crucial part of the Falcons’ offense, but the team had received multiple offers for him from other teams looking to bolster their receiving corps.
“We had a lot of conversations around Ridley,” Morris admitted. “There was interest from other teams, and we thought long and hard about it. But in the end, we decided keeping him was the best decision for us. He’s a major part of what we’re doing here.”
As for the pass rusher discussions, Morris acknowledged that the team had explored possible trade options, but ultimately decided not to make a move at this time.
“Pass rush is a key area for us,” Morris said. “But we feel confident with what we have on the roster right now. We’re always looking to improve, but sometimes the best move is to continue developing the talent you already have.”
The Falcons, currently in the midst of a competitive season, have been led by a strong defense and an offense featuring second-year quarterback Ridder, running back Bijan Robinson, and a steadily improving receiving corps. Morris emphasized that while these decisions may have caused some internal tension, the goal remains to build a championship-caliber team while keeping the focus on both immediate success and long-term sustainability.
As the Falcons continue their 2024 campaign, these internal debates and roster decisions will be closely watched, particularly with the team vying for playoff positioning in the NFC South. Coach Morris’ comments suggest a balanced approach, focused on developing young talent while remaining competitive in the short term.
