The decision by the Cubs to recognise the former running back as a “legend of the game” on Sunday before the team’s game against the Miami Dolphins has drawn criticism for Dansby Swanson.
Before being fired by the Ravens during the 2014 season due to a highly publicised domestic violence incident in which he was seen on camera assaulting his then-fiance (now wife) and dragging her out of an elevator, Rice was a top running back for the team.
After being taken into custody for the attack, the NFL suspended him for two games. He was cut by the Ravens, and he never returned to the league.
It was suggested by veteran NFL writer Mike Freeman of USA Today that the Ravens are committing “a terrible mistake” by giving Rice recognition.
The Ravens justify this move by pointing out that Rice has actively participated in the community, working with organisations that support victims of domestic abuse, and has made an effort to atone for the tragedy.
The legend was also cited as stating that he hopes people can see where he is now and that he is not the same person he was ten years ago, and that he understands why the team let him go.
Rice’s best chance of getting a second chance is if he works hard to make up for his previous faults. That’s what the Ravens insist he did. However, a sizable portion of the general population will still find it difficult to comprehend that and believe them.
Given his departure from the club (and the league), honouring him as a “legend of the game” is sure to cause controversy and expose Dansby Swanson to criticism.
