With over ten MLB seasons ahead of him, 22-year-old centre fielder Andrew McCutchen joined the Pirates. He contributed to the Pirates writing the kinds of powerful regular seasons and postseason runs that the team had not experienced in a few decades.
McCutchen is in a different place now that he is 37. Over the previous four seasons, he has only appeared in three games at centre field. Last season, he was virtually solely employed as a DH. “Will he be one of the Pirates’ greats?” has given way to “How long will we get to see this franchise icon?
For a minimum of another season, that is. McCutchen’s return trip to Pittsburgh will now last an additional season according to the Pirates’ announcement on Wednesday that they have signed him to a one-year deal. However, be aware that a goodbye tour and a return tour are not the same thing.

“I think I have at least two more [years] of playing left.” Two more at least, McCutchen remarked. “If that occurs and the next year comes around, I figure I’ll probably be done by then, I’ll say that. I’m not sure. Since I do so much better when I’m just having fun, I try not to put too much pressure on myself and instead just go out and enjoy myself as much as I can.
