Burrows had surgery on Wednesday to fix damage to his right elbow’s UCL, according to Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com.
According to a follow-up report by Kevin Gorman of TribLive.com, Burrows underwent Tommy John surgery, and he is anticipated to miss the next 14 to 16 months. Before his UCL failed, the 23-year-old had made just two starts for Triple-A Indianapolis this season. He was selected in the eleventh round of the 2018 First-Year Player Draft.
Burrows (forearm) was placed on Triple-A Indianapolis’ 7-day disabled list on April 11.
Burrows’ assignment to the minor leagues was completely anticipated following the announcement by Pirates general manager Ben Cherington on April 8 that the right-hander had sustained a forearm injury in his second appearance of the season for Indianapolis. There is no set date for the 23-year-old’s comeback.

As of Tuesday, Burrows had appeared in two Grapefruit League games; in those three innings, he gave up two runs on four hits, one strikeout, and no walks. The right-hander, who is regarded as one of Pittsburgh’s best arms, is probably going to make his Major League Baseball debut in 2023.
