25th March-22 May 2024: Atlanta Braves Legend Tom Glavine Sadly Kicks The Bucket @58 Tuesday night’s 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs was caused by the Braves’ inability to capitalize on numerous opportunities.
In the second, the Braves offense got things going. Travis d’Arnaud capitalized on an Assad oversight. After Orlando Arcia hit his fifth home run of the year, Michael Harris struck out to end the inning and give Atlanta a 2-0 lead.
Charlie Morton, who walked two and struck out the side in the first, was playing the whole game. In the second inning, Morton struck out Nico Hoerner but then hit Michael Busch and gave Dansby Swanson an infield single. It was more of the same. Rick Kranitz came over after he walked Miguel Amaya on four pitches to load the bases.
Tauchman then trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with a single to right that scored Busch. Returning to the game, Morton hit Suzuki with a changeup that swung in. This moved Cody Bellinger to the plate, and Swanson scored to tie the game after d’Arnaud passed the ball. Bellinger popped out in foul play to Zack Short.
With just seven pitches, Morton was able to retire the side in order in the third inning, which was all the time he needed. Michael Harris quickly gave the Braves the lead back, driving one into the left field bleachers to make it 3-2.
In the fifth, the Braves made a threat to add more. The inning began with a walk to Marcell Ozuna. After striking out Matt Olson, Assad gave Travis d’Arnaud another free pass. To put runners at the corners, Harris grounded into a force out. For Tyson Miller, Craig Counsell then went to his bullpen. Arcia struck out swinging, leaving the runners stranded, but Harris swiped second.
In the fifth, Morton got Bellinger to strike out before getting Morel to foul out. Next, Ian Happ doubled on a fastball that was nicked into the right field corner by Morton, who also struck out Hoerner to close the inning.
Daysbel Hernandez would replace Morton to begin the sixth inning. Though a tad unpredictable, Morton managed to survive the storm and give the Braves a chance to win. He gave up two runs and four hits, but only one of them was justified. He threw 94 pitches, eight strikeouts, and four walks.
To begin the inning, Hernandez got Busch to pop up, but Short made a two-base mistake as the ball flew out of his glove. Amaya singled to put runners at the corners after Swanson grounded out for the first out. Tauchman made that mistake count, scoring Busch with a single to right to tie the game. Subsequently, Harris made an excellent running catch as Suzuki lifted a fly ball to shallow center.
